CARM.es - Development chooses natural and innovative solutions to minimize flooding

The councillor visited the first logistical installation of a sustainable drainage system undertaken in the Region of Murcia, located in el Parque de Sureste
The Department of Development and Infrastructure chooses "natural and innovative" solutions such as sustainable drainage systems (SUDS) which minimise the impact of flooding and combat climate change in the Region of Murcia.
Today, during his visit to the SUD, located at the Parque Logístico del Sureste, councillor José Ramón Díez de Revenga declared that "this is one of the first urban developments and the first at the logistical level in the Region of Murcia in performing this kind of intervention, whose main function is to laminate rainwater, allowing it to infiltrate into the ground".
The councillor highlighted that "applying innovation to developments through Nature-based Solutions is an opportunity to imitate the processes of nature to contribute to better water management, and to strategically integrate them as an element of rainwater control in the urban landscape".
"We're commited to this eco-efficient rainwater management strategy and urban planning which seeks to improve the hydrological process prior to urban development: infiltration, filtration, storage and evapotranspiration," explained Díez de Revenga.
SUDs are one of the Nature-based Solutions collected by the 'Panel of Experts for Flood Risk Prevention in the Region of Murcia', which was set up by the Community after the DANA storm (Isolated Upper Level Depression) last year.
This is also included in the Sustainable Construction and Architecture Strategy promoted by the Regional government to "redirect the way of building towards improving the area's urban habitats, and working in favour of nature instead of trying to control it".
Díez de Revenga said that SUDS contribute to improving the quality of urban public spaces so they adapt to situations of rising rivers, watercourses and flooding in the urban context.
The councillor stated that in addition to laminating water, SUDS "also allow the reuse of rainwater to irrigate green zones". This happens in the Parque Logístico del Sureste which has five infiltration tanks (called TDUs) of different sizes, which are connected to rainwater collection networks in different parts of the park, depending on the streets and levels and integrated in the green zones.
